My daughter frequently says, “when the wheels fell off,” describing a season of her life. I have heard her say that a lot over the years, but yesterday she made that statement again, and I heard the phrase with different ears.
Sometimes, life seems to feel like all the wheels have fallen off. Our transportation gets us from one location to a destination, and without wheels we aren’t going anywhere.
How many times have you felt like you were stuck and not going anywhere? Maybe your wheels fell off!
Life often throws us circumstances we simply cannot overcome or change. When this happens, if we can’t change the situation, we have to change ourselves. Sometimes, we have to make hard decisions in order to survive and reclaim our lives.
God has great plans and purposes for each of us, but sometimes we have to unearth our potential and rediscover who we are. We have to go back and reclaim who we were when we were young and alive.
Life can beat the breath out of us to the point we don’t know who we are and where we have been. All we know is that where we are feels really awful and we must make big changes to survive.
Part of self-discovery is going back and reclaiming the many things we did in our former lives that gave us life.
Retirement has given me time and space to rediscover myself and all the things I used to enjoy decades ago, and all the new found interests like painting and writing. A month ago, I would have said writing these posts were more trouble and effort than they were worth.
BUT now the discipline of writing every day has opened up a deep reservoir of sensitivity to the commonplace. I see delight and meaning in the most ordinary things—like dead flowers and tablecloths.
It is hard to come up with something interesting to say every day and I have really been struggling with the demands of this blog.
So the Lord in His sweetness said, “Look for joy and meaning in the little seemingly insignificant things of life.”
In the past few days, I have been finding amusement in commonplace little things and joy has been popping up everywhere.
Learning to live in the moment and enjoy every breath of life is a gift from God.

So true
When the wheels fall off, we need to remember that God will carry us, if we can no longer move ourselves. Remember the footprints in the sand???? I am enjoying your writing and your daily blog!
I also am enjoying your writing! I remember when I quit my full time job to stay home with Tanner…one day I was holding him while he was sleeping and I looked up and noticed my light fixtures in the livivng room, dining room and entrance way for the first time and thought “WOW, what beautiful light fixtures we have!!!”
