My new best friend is a red ruffled tablecloth.
Of course, there is a back story. I have been writing on and off for months about reclaiming your life and digging deep to find the treasures that lie deep within. So here is my latest creation and the story.
I grew up with a mom who was a wonderful seamstress; luckily, she passed this gift on to me at an early age. I was making dresses by the time I was ten years old and continued to grow in my ability to create with fabric.
When I was an older teenager, maybe seventeen or eighteen, there was a dance at the “country club,” and I wanted something fun to wear. I dug around in my mother’s sewing closet, and found some drapery material, created a pattern, and made a floor-length dress in a few hours. The dress was stunning. I will never forget that day of creativity. It was exhilarating!
As the years passed by and life’s demands consumed me, I put away my sewing machine and shut the door on that part of my life. My creativity started to wither and die.
About ten years ago, I bought a fancy, complicated sewing machine with all the bells and whistles and started sewing again. By then, I had given up on dresses, and started making drapes and all kinds of things for the house. After many years of not sewing, I decided last week to drag out the machine and make a red ruffled kitchen tablecloth. This tablecloth is a happy thing to me! I see “her” when I walk in the front or back door and “she” is so cheery that “she” feels like a new friend.
Life is confusing and hard right now, and we need to find joy and pleasure in little things. Look for little things to give you delight while we ride out the craziness going on all around us.
Drag out old interests or talents from your past and reengage with them in new ways. You may actually find a “new friend” in the process.
