After a couple of weeks of rain, I knew it was time to make an assessment of the garden. I headed to Jess’s house to check on the tender plants. Upon first glance, they appeared to be doing well. Three weeks ago the frost killed almost everything and Jess had to replant the tomatoes, peppers, and squash. My main contribution is to tend to the young seedlings, and make sure the lettuce beds are thriving.
The tender lettuces, carrots, beets, radishes, kale, and spinach were beginning to show signs of growth. But were they “plants or weeds?” I couldn’t identify.
They looked like plants, but were they weeds? It was hard to tell.
I dug around the roots and loosened the soil around all the plants .I planted more green beans, peas, and lettuce, and I redistributed cucumber plants to the corner of the boxes so the vines would flow out of the boxes onto the ground.
SO IS LIFE!
We need to dig around the good “fruit” in our lives and identify the weeds.
When weeds are beginning to take root in our heart, we often can’t identify exactly what they are. They may actually appear to be something good—only to grow into something so wrong.
The garden of our heart needs rich soil and rain from above to thrive. Without the refreshing of the Holy Spirit, our garden will come to nothing.
Tending to our heart and having regular “fruit” inspection will help us to pull out the weeds—sins that so easily entangle us, and endeavors that take us down a road of compromise.
Compromise starts out as little “weeds” that taint our conscience. We keep pushing ourselves to accept things that violate our spirit, until we can do and see anything, and it’s all OK because we have forced the Holy Spirit out and are left to our own devices.
When Jess and I started our gardening adventure, we stood around the beds of rich soil and prayed that God would bless our efforts and let our little garden grow.
Hopefully, we will be able to feed our families, as well as others, as we watch God’s provision come forth through our efforts and His blessings.
You know that’s how it works in life. God expects us to get up and do something! When we work at whatever He has asked us to do, He can bless our efforts.
If we sit and do nothing, no blessing flow.
Work as if it is all up to you, and pray as if it all depends on God.
