We need to go deeper in the things of God as we ride out crisis and chaos in America.
Twenty-four years ago, I was given a copy of The Sovereignty of God, by Arthur W. Pink.
The significance of this book in my life has been powerful in grounding me when all around me seems to be falling apart.
At every major juncture in our recent American history, I have gone to Pink’s book in conjunction with the Bible to stabilize my faith in God’s ultimate control over all things in heaven and on earth.
The first edition of the book was published in June 1918, after the breakout of the Spanish flu that infected 500 million people and killed an estimated 20-50 million worldwide with 650,000 deaths in the United States. The world was still fighting World War I which ended with the Spanish flu in 1918.
The world was in total chaos after World War I with 15-20 million deaths from war and 21 million wounded, ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history (World War I casualties-Wikipedia). Then the world suffered the loss of 20-50 million deaths due to the Spanish flu.
Pink wrote The Sovereignty of God in the midst of these horrible world events that affected almost every nation on earth.
He stated in 1918, “In addition to the widespread effects of unscriptural teaching, we also have to reckon with the deplorable superficiality of the present generation. The craving today is for something light and spicy, and few have patience, still less desire, to examine carefully that which would make a demand both upon their hearts and their mental powers. It is difficult for those who desire the deeper things of God to find the time which such study requires (page 2 of Pink’s Foreword for 1918 publishing).” John 3:27 says, ” A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.” The superficial seeker of truth will never find the power of truth written in Pink’s book.
He purports many truths, but two things are beyond dispute: God is sovereign, and man is a responsible creature.
The second edition of the book was written in 1921, third edition in 1929 after the Stock Market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression, and the fourth edition in 1949 after World War II. He writes this powerful book during history when all nations and people groups around the globe were living in dark and dangerous times.
I am introducing this book to any serious believer in Jesus who wants to understand the deeper things of God and find grounding for the hard days ahead in America.
“Nothing is so tranquilizing and so stabilizing as the assurance that the Lord Himself is on the Throne of the universe, working all things after the counsel of His own will (Forward to the Third Edition).”
So with this introduction, let’s dig into the powerful truth of the sovereignty of God.
