I received so many wonderful comments about the last post titled, Make Space for Creativity, that I decided to continue with this theme. Many years ago I stumbled across a book titled, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, which was a starting point for me in writing.
Little did I know at that time there was a painter inside of me.
She leads all of us on A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity. Today, I would like to share some of her thoughts and make comments along the way. Initially, I thought I was writing one post on creativity, but the writing process takes over and I meander down an unknown path. So let’s see where this goes.
My hope is to awaken your soul where creativity lives!
Cameron states in her Introduction, “Remember, there is a creative energy that wants to express itself through you.”; “Don’t judge the work or yourself. You can sort it out later.”; “Let God work through you.” (page XV) “Creativity is like crabgrass–it springs back with the simplest bit of care.” (page XV).
I find the more I paint, the more color falls on the canvas in a mystifying way
(this is especially true for someone who has no idea what they are doing). I will say I have two great mentors who have helped me along this path. I paint and do all I know to do, and they give me the nudge and help I need to move to the next level. Without them I would be lost.
The same is true for writing. The more I write, the more the writing process takes over.
The issue is TIME. You have to make time and stay with it however long it takes. “Faith is the required ingredient.” (page xviii). To write you have to show up at the page; to paint, you must show up at the canvas.
Don’t squander your creative energy by investing disproportionately in the lives, hopes, dreams, and plans of others. We have to excavate our buried dreams. (page 6)
We give so much time and attention to others, we have little energy and strength to dedicate to our own lives. Many of us have at least one dysfunctional family member (if we only have one, we are lucky) who drains us of energy and creativity. As we set tight boundaries around our lives, we start to experience autonomy and creative flow.
In order to unleash your creativity, you need to discover it. You need to establish windows of time to engage in your new artist endeavor.
I recommend Julia’s book to any of you who are serious about creating a new world of creative discovery.
